What are bonds?
Shares make you an owner. Bonds make you a lender.
The simple version
A bond is a loan to a government or company. They pay you interest and return your money at the end. Government bonds from stable countries are usually lower risk than shares, but lower reward too. Bond prices move when interest rates change: rates up, existing bond prices down.
